Interesting Fact #1 Braces Have Been Around for Nearly 300 Years!

The first set of braces was made in 1728 and was created by French physician Dr. Pierre Fauchard. However, that’s not the only accomplishment Doctor Fauchard has under his belt. For starters, he is also known as the “Father of Modern Dentistry.”

The first ever braces consisted of a flat piece of metal which was connected by a thread to the wearer’s teeth. Almost two centuries after, dentist Dr. Edward Angle introduced a few significant advancements to address problematic tooth alignment more effectively. In 1915, he created brackets made from 14 or 18 karat gold because it has malleable properties.

Interesting Fact #2 The Wire Used for Braces Was Invented by No Less than NASA

While Dr. Angle’s creation was truly ingenious, it was also costly. Understandably, braces made from gold can be very expensive. Fortunately, orthodontics took a massive leap when NASA introduced the metal alloy nickel titanium in 1959.

While the heat-resistant metal was initially designed for space-bound shuttles, it was discovered to be also perfect for making thin but highly flexible wires that can retain their shape even if bent and attached to the wearer’s teeth.
